Most athletes spend a lot of time thinking about training.
Miles. Intervals. Strength work. Recovery.
But one factor quietly affects performance, focus, and recovery - and most athletes barely think about it.
Hydration.
Not just drinking water. Proper Hydration
What Happens When You Dehydrate
When you sweat, you don't just lose water - you lose sodium, the primary electrolyte lost in sweat.
As fluid and sodium levels drop:
- Blood volume decreases
- Your heart works harder
- Muscles get less oxygen
- The same pace starts to feel harder
Even mild dehydration can noticeably reduce endurance performance.
It Affects Your Brain Too
Hydration also impacts mental performance.
Low hydration often leads to:
- Reduced focus
- Slower decision-making
- Increased fatigue
If you've ever felt foggy or unusually drained during a long run or ride, dehydration is often part of it.
The Simple Takeaway
Most hydration advice is just:
"Drink more water."
But water alone doesn't replace the sodium lost in sweat - and without enough sodium, your body struggles to retain the fluid you drink.
Which is why hydration is often the most overlooked performance factor in endurance sports.
It's also one of the easiest to fix.
